The importance of verifying Identity in a Notarization

When you need a document notarized, you will be required to present valid identification to the notary. The notary will examine the identification to ensure that it is genuine and that it matches the person signing the document. In some instances, the notary may also take additional steps to verify your identity, such as asking you to sign a notarial journal or taking a fingerprint. These extra steps further assure that the person signing the document is indeed who they claim to be. Once the notary is satisfied that your identity has been verified, they will proceed with notarizing the document. This involves witnessing your signature and applying the notary’s official seal to the document. The notary will also record the transaction details in their logbook, including the type of document, the date, signers & witnesses signatures, & the identification used.
